ENVI Committee : approval of the provisional agreement reached with the Council on ECHA's regulation

The ENVI Committee of the European Parliament approved the provisional agreement for the regulation of the European Chemicals Agency, reached with the Council, by 68 votes in favor, 1 against, and 1 abstention, on 10 September 2026.

This text aims to strengthen the Agency, regarding its growing responsibilities, which now include product safety and environmental policy, including scientific opinions on restricting microplastics and PFAS. Under the agreement, ECHA’s extended tasks and responsibilities will be consolidated into a single regulation, decoupling the agency from the REACH regulation which initially established it.

Additionally, the agreement allows the European Parliament or member states to request scientific opinions from ECHA, following consultation with the Commission.
