EC: Request for transposition of the Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition directive

The European Commission has asked twenty Member States, including France, to fully transpose Directive EU-2024/825 (Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition) into national law, it announced on 28/05/2026.

The aim of the directive is to prohibit and penalise vague and unsubstantiated environmental claims, and to provide a better framework for sustainability labels. Penalties of up to 4% of turnover are provided for in the event of infringement by companies. It complements the Green Claims Directive (still under negotiation), which will define the technical and legal framework for environmental claims.

The other Member States concerned are Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Spain, Croatia, Cyprus, Latvia, Luxembourg, Hungary, Malta, the Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Finland and Sweden.

The Commission is sending them a letter of formal notice, giving them two months, i.e. until the end of July 2026, to respond and complete transposition of the directives. If they fail to do so, the Commission may issue a stronger warning, known as a…
