EC: a public consultation and a call for evidence regarding the Post-2030 energy efficiency framework

A 12-week public consultation and a 4-week call for evidence are launched to "help shape EU energy efficiency rules for the decade ahead", announced the European Commission on 09/04/2026.

The aim is to ensure that "energy efficiency contributes to the EU’s climate target of a 90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2040, in a cost-efficient way. Existing legislation relates to the EU’s 55% greenhouse gas reduction target for 2030 and so the development of an energy efficiency framework for after 2030 is needed".

The conclusions of these two exercices will feed into the Commission's preparations of the legislative proposal for the post-2030 energy efficiency framework, which is "scheduled for publication in the last quarter of 2026".

According to the Commission, "recent assessments have highlighted the need to ensure that the energy efficiency framework (the 2012 Energy Efficiency Directive) remains fit for purpose amidst evolving technological and geopolitical shifts".
