The EU and Japan decide to deepen their climate cooperation five years after their "Green Alliance"

"Working together towards achieving climate neutrality and tackling shared economic and geopolitical challenges": this is what Japanese and European senior officials decided at the High-Level Dialogue on Climate Change between the EU and Japan in Brussels on 24/03/2026.

"In the context of the current crisis in the Gulf region, both sides acknowledged the importance of the clean energy transition that contributes not only to climate neutrality but also to their respective security, independence and competitiveness", highlights the Commission.

Kurt Vandenberghe, Director-General for Climate Action at the European Commission and Kentaro Doi, Vice-Minister for Global Environmental Affairs at the Ministry of the Environment of Japan, both reaffirmed their commitment to multilateralism and to the Paris Agreement. They also highlighted how necessary it was to scale up climate action in this decade in order to keep the limit of 1.5°C temperature rise by the end of the century within reach.
