Environmental and Climate Laws: 9 Member States face infringement procedures for their failure to comply

The European Commission issued its March infringement procedures on 11/03/2026. Eight letters of formal notice have been sent to EU Member States (first step of the infringement procedures), and three reasoned opinions have been issued (second step of the procedures) for the failure to comply with Environmental Laws. Austria and Romania were sent letters of formal notice for failure to report on their climate and energy progress.

• Greece was called to update its national air pollution control programme under the Directive on the reduction of national emissions of certain atmospheric pollutants.
• Sweden was asked to comply with the Ambient Air Quality Directive.
• France was called to ensure its compliance with the Water Framework Directive.
• Lithuania was asked to transpose the Waste Framework Directive.
• Germany was called to transpose the Drinking Water Directive correctly.
