ENVI Committee: "We do not have sufficient informations about the use of ETS revenues" (F. Maran / MEP)

"We do not have sufficient information on the use of ETS revenues. Yet, this is fundamental for our decisions. Especially when we are discussing adjustments to ETS 1, and while some national governments wish to abolish this system. Member States are part of the process and we need to know exactly how ETS is going", declared Pierfrancesco Maran (S&D), president of the ENVI Committee of the European Parliament, on 05/03/2026.

He called on the Commission to "help to have further information", during an exchange of views on "the transparency, traceability, and public visibility of revenues derived from the ETS", during an ordinary meeting of the committee.

According to Mette Quinn, Head of Unit Policy Coordination and International Carbon Markets at the DG Clima, "Member States have to report annually how they revenues, by the end of July". This monitoring is "really important, especially now that Member States have to allocate 100% of ETS revenues to climate and social activities, and not 50%".
