UK shipping: biomethanol refuelling service launched by Exolum, Methanex and Ørsted

"Exolum, Methanex Corporation and Ørsted are launching the UK's first commercially operational biomethanol storage and supply service for shipping," they announced on 10/02/2026. "The project will provide biomethanol bunkering services at the Port of Immingham, the UK's largest port by freight volume, located on the east coast of England."

As part of the initiative :
• Exolum will provide the storage and refuelling infrastructure at Immingham ;
• Methanex will supply the biomethanol for the project ;
• and Ørsted will be the first to use the service for its maintenance vessels for the offshore wind farms in the North Sea, ten of which are located off the UK coast, supporting the UK's clean energy ambitions".

According to the companies, the partnership "shows how existing energy infrastructure can support new sustainable fuels, and proves their dedication to decarbonising shipping, even though the International Maritime Organisation postponed its vote on implementing the “Net Zero” framework by one year, on 17/12/2025".
