ACC gigafactories: two projects in Italy and Germany abandoned following Stellantis announcements

"ACC's management has made official what we have been fearing for a long time: the project to build a gigafactory in Termoli has been definitively abandoned, just as in Germany," declared Gianluca Ficco, national secretary of the metalworkers' union UILM, responsible for the automotive sector, and Francesco Guida, general secretary of UILM in Campobasso (southern Italy), on 07/02/2026.

ACC, a European battery manufacturing joint venture owned by Stellantis, Mercedes-Benz and TotalEnergies and its subsidiary Saft, was planning to develop three gigafactories in Europe to increase its production capacity of batteries for electric vehicles. The announcement that the projects in Germany and Italy have been abandoned, and that ACC's expansion plans have been frozen, due to uncertainties over EV sales volumes in Europe, comes against a backdrop of downward revisions to Stellantis' electric vehicle ambitions. Stellantis also announced the end of its joint venture with LG Energy in Canada (Nextstar), a flagship project of the previous management team for the production of lithium batteries.
