“I urge Member States who have not submitted their draft Nature Restoration Plan to do so as soon as possible”, as the Commission and the European Environment Agency are now assessing them, Jessika Roswall said during a plenary debate held in Strasbourg on 7 October 2026.

The Commissioner for Environment, Water Resilience and a Competitive Circular Economy added that those plans were “an important investment and also a planning tool that can help to prioritise measures, identify costs, but also ways to limit them and to assess the needs for resources”.

The drafts were due on 1 September 2026. Only nine Member States have submitted theirs so far: Austria, Bulgaria, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Portugal, the Netherlands, Sweden and Spain.
