European Commission: Ion Codescu appointed Director for Biodiversity at DG Environment

The European Commission has appointed Romanian national Ion Codescu as Director for Biodiversity within its Directorate-General for Environment (DG ENV), the Commission announced on 6 October 2026. The date on which he will take up the post has not yet been set.

In this role, he will drive forward the EU's biodiversity agenda within DG ENV, the Commission department in charge of designing and implementing EU environmental policy with a view to sustainable development.

Codescu currently heads DG ENV's Land Use and Management unit, and has already been serving as acting director of the Biodiversity directorate, according to the DG's organisation chart. The post was previously held by Portuguese official Humberto Delgado Rosa, who led the directorate from 2015 to 2025.
