PFAS: ECHA's Committee for Risk Assessment final opinion on TFA's classification as reprotoxic substance

The ECHA's Committee for Risk Assessment (RAC) final opinion, recommending the classification of Trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), as well as its inorganic salts, as a reprotoxic substance, has been sent to the European Commission, the Agency said on 6 October 2026.

RAC's final opinion was unanimously adopted in June 2026, following the proposal by the German authorities. It considered that the substances are “toxic to reproduction, persistent, mobile, and toxic and very persistent and very mobile, causing long-lasting contamination of water resources.

TFA is already in the list of substances with an EU harmonised classification and labelling being also classified as harmful to aquatic life with long-lasting effects, the Agency says.
