“Multilateral development banks have a diverse toolbox of instruments at their disposal. The challenge that remains is deploying and connecting these solutions in a coherent, coordinated manner, as part of holistic, tailored packages of support for countries navigating the transition away from fossil fuels”, according to a new E3G briefing, released by the think-tank on 5 October 2026.

It notably follows the Santa Marta Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels (TAFF) conference, held in Colombia in April 2026, which remains “a significant unfulfilled opportunity”, despite the created opportunity to “reinvigorate it as a priority area”.

MDBs can already rely on an established toolkit, including financial mechanisms, and technical assistance and policy advisory support.
