ENVI Committee: rejection of the objection regarding carbon sequestration certification methods

The draft resolution opposing the European Commission’s delegated regulation establishing methods for certifying carbon stock activities was rejected by the European Parliament’s ENVI Committee by 40 votes to 38 on 5 October 2026.

According to the German MEPs Tiemo Wölken (S&D), Michael Bloss (Greens/EFA) and Martin Günther (GUE/NGL), who tabled this objection, the certification methods “do not meet the standards established under the Paris Agreement’s carbon credit mechanism and undermine best practice in the voluntary carbon market as well as the best available scientific evidence”.

In particular, they argue that the selected methods are too flexible, do not require the adoption of the most prudent approach, cap the risk rate for agricultural activities on mineral soils at 15 per cent …
