“There is still a lack of data, evidence and monitoring on data centres, and it is in everyone's interest to collect them, for energy but also for other types of consumption," Eugenio Morello, Associate Professor of Urban Planning at Politecnico di Milano, told News Tank on 23 September 2026.

Together with Cristiana Mattioli and Alice Franchina, Morello led a project mapping data centres across the Milan metropolitan area. The project, called ProdAction: Urban Ecosystems and carried out under CRAFT, the Competence Centre for Antifragile Territories at the Department of Architecture and Urban Studies (DAStU) of Politecnico di Milano, also examines the impact of data centres on energy, land, and environmental and urban planning.
