EEB: withdrawal from the Critical Chemicals Alliance “over industry capture and deregulation risks”

The European Environmental Bureau announced its withdrawal from the Critical Chemicals Alliance "over industry capture and deregulation risks" on 1 October 2026.

Part of the European Chemicals Industry Action Plan, the Alliance was launched in January 2026 by the European Commission to “identify chemicals and production capacities considered critical to Europe’s economy and address concerns around supply and competitiveness”.

On the eve of the adoption of CCA's recommendations at its second General Assembly on 8 October and after 8 months of participation, the EEB concluded that “fundamental shortcomings in governance and methodology pave the way for weakening key EU health, environmental and climate safeguards”.
