EU Commission: allocation of additional €500M to Horizon Europe with new call focused on biodiversity

The European Commission has allocated an additional €500 million to Horizon Europe, the EU's flagship research and innovation programme, for 2026 and 2027. With this additional amount, the total budget now reaches around €14.8 billion for the two years.

The new budget was announced on 29 September 2026 by the Commission, which also released two monitoring reports on the same day showing that Horizon Europe remains highly attractive for researchers, innovators and companies from across Europe and beyond.

The Commission also extended the scope of Horizon Europe by including two new cross-cutting calls to tackle major research and innovation challenges: Transformative Change Towards a Nature-Positive Economy and Society (with a budget of €237m) and Bridging Actions 2027 (with a total…
