France 2030: a research programme dedicated to the habitability of the Earth, led by the CNRS and the IRD

The CNRS and the IRD (French Research Institute for Development) are launching an exploratory research programme dedicated to the habitability of the Earth, with funding of €50 million over 10 years as part of France 2030, the two partners announced on 28 September 2026.

Entitled “Transform”, it aims to “better understand and influence the interactions between human societies and their territories in the context of global change, as well as to identify the conditions necessary to maintain or restore the habitability of territories”.

To this end, experimental sites in France and internationally will be established, bringing together researchers in the humanities, ecology and Earth sciences, as well as civil society organisations, local authorities, local communities and economic…
