UN Climate Summit: A. Guterres calls on countries to "develop a credible roadmap to transition away"

“I call on every country to develop a credible roadmap to transition away from fossil fuels, with clear timelines. The G20, responsible for 80% of global emissions, must lead the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities that must apply”, said António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, on 23 September 2026.

He opened the UN Climate Summit 2026, on the sidelines of the General Assembly’s high-level week at UN Headquarters in New York, underlining that, according to science, “the world is heading for an overshoot of the 1.5°C limit”.

“Emissions are still rising, and fossil fuel expansion continues, defying science, economics and common sense. Doubling down on oil and gas will only lock in vulnerability for decades,” he said.
