Ineos Energy/Denmark: inauguration of Greensand, first full-scale facility for carbon storage in the EU

His Majesty King Frederik X of Denmark officially opened the first full-scale facility for permanent CO₂ storage in the European Union on 18/09/2026, two years after the official launch of Northern Lights in neighbouring Norway, an EEA member, on 26/09/2024.

The project, led by Ineos Energy alongside oil and gas company Harbour Energy and Danish state-owned subsurface resource manager Nordsøfonden, is designed to store up to 400,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually beneath the seabed in the North Sea. The site has been designed for further expansion, with the potential to store 4-8 million tonnes per year as demand grows.
