EU and FAO launch €5 million initiative to boost climate resilience of agrifood systems in Afghanistan

The European Union and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) announced a new €5 million programme on 13 September 2026 in Kabul, aimed at improving market access, incomes and climate resilience for Afghan farmers and agrifood businesses.

Targeted districts are those where food insecurity, climate hazards and weak economic opportunities are most acute. The programme is aimed in particular at returnee families, internally displaced people, host communities, women and young people.

Under the plan, four one-stop hubs will connect farmers and rural entrepreneurs with technical advice, agribusinesses and buyers. The programme will also restore 2,000 hectares of degraded forest and rangeland and support 250 women- and community-led nurseries.
