Commission: 5.2 million ETS allowances (around €430M) allocated to airlines for using SAF in 2025

The European Commission announced on 15 September 2026 that 5.2 million EU ETS allowances, worth approximately €430 million, had been allocated to 130 airlines to support their use of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) in 2025.

The allocations follow the Commission Decision adopted on 8 September 2026, which implements the SAF support mechanism established under the EU ETS Directive for 2025. The allocation is based on calculations submitted by Member State authorities for commercial air carriers.

The Commission also noted that this year’s support is more than four times higher than last year’s. Overall, the ETS incentive for SAF use in 2025 amounts to approximately €565 million, compared with €125 million in 2024, comprising:
