Glyphosate: its classification as a carcinogen is ‘unjustified’ according to ECHA

The findings of a study carried out by the Ramazzini Institute in June 2025, which examined the carcinogenicity of glyphosate, do not “justify its classification as a carcinogen”, according to the opinion of the Risk Assessment Committee (RAC) of the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), adopted on 8 September 2026.

At that meeting, the RAC concluded that this study did not call into question the conclusions of the hazard assessment of glyphosate, and in particular its 2022 decision, which did not classify the substance as carcinogenic.

This decision had, in particular, served as the basis for the European Commission’s renewal of the authorisation for glyphosate for ten years in 2023.
