Solar power: Europe is off track to meet its 2030 target (SolarPower Europe)

Given the current market conditions and public policies, the EU remains off track to meet its 2030 solar energy target, on the one hand; on the other hand, despite its contribution to European energy security and to maintaining affordable prices, political support for solar energy continues to wane: these are two of the main conclusions of the report ‘EU Solar Market Update: 2026 Mid-Year Analysis’, published by SolarPower Europe on 8 September 2026.

The EU’s 2030 target, as set out in the REPowerEU strategy, is 750 GW of installed solar photovoltaic capacity. According to SolarPower’s median scenario, installed capacity in Europe will stand at 718 GW in 2030, 32 GW short of the target. To reach 750 GW, the EU will need to install an average of around 68.7 GW per year until 2030.
