EU Commission inaugurates Europe's largest industrial carbon capture and storage plant in the Netherlands

The Yara Sluiskil plant in Zeeland, Netherlands, began operations on 7 September 2026 as Europe's largest commercial carbon capture and storage (CCS) project. The facility, located in the village of Sluiskil, is expected to capture and liquefy as much as 800,000 tonnes of CO2 each year from its ammonia production, used in Yara's fertilizers production.

Once captured, the CO2 will be shipped to Norway and stored permanently beneath the North Sea at the Northern Lights site, an initiative backed by EU funding through the Connecting Europe Facility.
