World Meteorological Organisation: "Air pollutants are not sufficiently monitored"

"Air pollutants such as fine particulate matter, ground-level ozone, and aerosols like black carbon and microplastics are not sufficiently monitored. Although they are widespread and potentially harmful to ecosystems, more atmospheric observations are needed to improve air quality and protect human and ecosystem health", according to some findings published in the latest issue of the WMO Air Quality and Climate Bulletin, released on 7 September 2026.

The organisation also stressed the importance of complementary and coordinated policies on air quality and climate, “because they cannot be dealt with in isolation”.

Among the key findings, “current air quality risk assessments often fail to adequately capture the enhanced toxicity of wildfire smoke”.
