Nuclear: a floating power station developed to decarbonise the French maritime sector (Newcleo)

A consortium led by Newcleo has been selected to develop a floating nuclear power station to help decarbonise the French maritime sector, the Franco-Italian company announced on 26 August 2026.

Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore, a maritime classification society and expert in risk assessment, and ABMI Groupe, a French engineering firm specialising in the maritime and nuclear sectors, are part of the consortium alongside Newcleo.

The project was selected following the call for proposals entitled ‘Support for the decarbonisation of the French maritime sector’, launched by Bpifrance between 17 September 2024 and 14 October 2025.

The partners have secured funding of nearly €1 million under this programme. Work has already begun and is expected to run for 18 months.
