EU Commission: approval of Malta's €60 million Social Climate Plan for clean transition

The European Commission endorsed Malta's Social Climate Plan on 29/07/2026, making it the fourth national plan approved so far under the EU's Social Climate Fund, a mechanism that channels carbon-pricing revenues toward supporting a fair transition to clean energy.

Under the plan, Malta will mobilise €60.6 million by 2032. Of this, €45.4 million comes fully from the EU's Emissions Trading Systems (both EU ETS and ETS2), with Malta funding the remaining share itself.

The broader Social Climate Fund exists to help EU countries finance the projects laid out in their individual national plans, with the goal of making sure no one is left behind as the block moves toward cleaner energy.
