UK: Dame Angela Eagle appointed Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs

Dame Angela Eagle has been appointed Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) in the Cabinet of the new Prime Minister Andy Burnham, on 21 July 2026.

She previously served as a Defra minister with responsibility for food security and rural affairs, from 6 September 2025 to 12 June 2026, before moving to the Home Office and Cabinet Office as Security Minister in June 2026.

Angela  was first elected to Parliament in 1992, when she became the first ever Labour Member of Parliament for Wallasey (Merseyside).   In her time as MP for Wallasey, Angela has served as a minister in several departments. Under Tony Blair, these included Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Environment, Transport and the Regions; for Social Security and for Home Affairs.
