EV charging: the AFIR target for Q1 2026 exceeded in all EU countries except Malta (T&E study)

France has so far achieved 140 per cent of the power target set by the EU under the AFIR (Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Regulation), with 1.3 kW of public charging capacity per electric car, according to the T&E association in a study published on 20 July 2026.

All other European countries, with the exception of Malta, are also exceeding their power targets. In the first quarter of 2026, 23 of the 27 EU countries had a charging capacity more than twice that required by the AFIR.

The EU had 1.1 million public charging points in 2025, five times more than in 2020. This figure is expected to almost double by 2030, reaching 2.1 million charging points.
