"Year after year, we have developed effective and accessible technologies to help us travel, heat our homes and generate energy whilst gradually moving away from fossil fuels. The challenge now is to accelerate their roll-out,” said Monique Barbut, Minister for Ecological Transition, at the launch of the French SNBC 3 on 15 July 2026.

The strategy aims to halve France’s GHG emissions by 2030 compared with 1990 levels and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, notably by phasing out the use of coal by 2030, oil by 2045 and fossil gas by 2050.

The strategy also sets a target to reduce France’s carbon footprint by between 71 per cent and 79 per cent by 2050 compared with 2010, in order to reduce the average carbon footprint of a French citizen to between 2.3 and 3.1 tonnes of CO₂e per capita.
