EC: publication of an amendment to Regulation 2024/1157, authorising the shipment of waste to Switzerland

Following the publication of Regulation 2024/1157, which aims to eliminate the export of waste to third countries and is due to come into force shortly, the Commission published an amendment on 10 July 2026. It has become apparent that the ban on exporting municipal waste to Switzerland (a third country) would consequently lead to a shift in the transport of such waste to other countries and to more distant waste management facilities, and would result in rail transport of waste being replaced by additional road transport.

This would increase the costs of managing such waste and generate additional greenhouse gas emissions linked to the extra road transport, whilst offering very limited benefits. Consequently, it is necessary to amend Article 44(2)(f) of Regulation (EU) 2024/1157 in…
