France: greenhouse gas emissions fell by 4.8 per cent in the first quarter of 2026

Greenhouse gas emissions in France fell by 4.8 per cent in the first half of 2026 compared with the first half of 2025, according to the French public statistics office Citepa in its quarterly report published on 8 July 2026.

Greenhouse gas emissions are estimated at 98.5 Mt CO₂e for the first three months of 2026, compared with 103.5 Mt CO₂e in the first half of 2025. This “net decrease” is mainly driven by lower emissions from buildings, transport and industry, according to the Citepa report.

The sharpest fall was seen in building use and residential and tertiary sector activities (-10.7 % year-on-year).
