EU: European Commission adopts its Protein plan

The Action Plan for the Resilience, Strategic Autonomy and Sustainability of the European Protein System was adopted by the European Commission on 7 July 2026. Its aim is to increase the share of protein derived from oilseeds and protein crops produced in the EU and used for animal feed within the EU from 25.8 per cent in 2025 to 35 per cent in 2035.

“The plan strengthens EU production by promoting protein crops through CAP instruments and by developing resilient value chains, supported by processing infrastructure, increased use of contracts and targeted investments. At the same time, it promotes the diversification of imports as well as more efficient and locally rooted livestock farming systems — notably through grassland-based extensification and optimised feeding strategies…
