Renewable energy sources accounted for 58 per cent of electricity consumption in Germany in the first half of 2026, according to preliminary calculations by the Baden-Württemberg Research Centre for Solar Energy and Hydrogen (ZSW) and the Federal Association of Energy and Water (BDEW), published on 1 July 2026.

This figure represents an increase of three percentage points compared with the same period in 2025 and exceeds the rate recorded for the whole of 2025 (55.8 per cent).

Renewable energy generation facilities produced 152.2 TWh of electricity between January and June 2026 (compared with 144.1 TWh in the first half of 2025; +5.6 per cent). Wind power generation is up, both for onshore (+7%) and offshore (+28.3%) compared with the first half of 2025. Solar PV generation rose by 3.7%, whilst hydroelectric generation fell by 7.7%, due to lower rainfall compared with 2025. Biomass generation increased by 0.6%.
