Technip Energies: launch of Narea, a standardised solution for the chemical recycling of plastics

Technip Energies, in partnership with Alterra and Neste, has announced the commercial launch of Nerea, a new 'plant-as-a-product' designed to accelerate the development of chemical recycling projects for plastic waste, on 29 June 2026.

Developed following a collaboration agreement signed between the three companies in November 2024, Nerea combines, in a modularised and standardised package engineered by Technip Energies, the US company Alterra’s thermochemical liquefaction technology, as well as the chemical recycling expertise of the Finnish firm Neste, which inaugurated its chemical recycling plant in Porvoo (Finland), with a capacity of 150,000 tonnes per annum.

Alterra’s technology, which has been tried and tested for five years on an industrial scale using real plastic streams at the Akron (Ohio), is now being made available to potential customers (waste management companies, project developers, refineries and petrochemical plants) as a ‘plant-as-a-product’ solution, designed for rapid commissioning in a variety of industrial settings.
