PFAS: the European Commission recommends analysing levels in animal feed

"Member States, in collaboration with operators in the feed sector, should monitor the presence of PFAS in feed during 2026, 2027 and 2028", according to a recommendation adopted by the European Commission on 11 June 2026 and published in the Official Journal of the EU on 16 June 2026.

According to the Commission, the available data “remains limited”. Thus, four substances are covered by these measures - PFOS, PFOA, PFNA and PFHxS - as well as similar compounds.

Analyses will mainly focus on the following animal feed:
• fish, other aquatic animals and their derived products;
• seaweed meal and feed materials derived from seaweed;
• feed of mineral origin;
• forage, silage, hay and fresh grass;
• liquid feed;
• compound feed containing fish, other aquatic animals and their by-products and/or seaweed meal and feed materials derived from seaweed.

The European Commission also requests that analyses be carried out on the soil on which food-producing animals graze, and on their drinking water. Packaging materials as a source of contamination may also be examined.
