European Commission: 7 new State aids approved to support transitions - News Tank summary N°3

The European Commission has approved 7 State aid schemes for 6 member states to support environmental and energy transitions, since the last summary published by News Tank on May 2026. Since the beginning of 2026, 40 State aid schemes of 19 States were approved.

Austria is the only country that has 2 approved schemes dedicated to transitions for a total amount of €110M.

Regarding the dotation, Italy has seen the highest amount approved with €23Bn to support renewable electricity production. Germany comes next, €1,3Bn to support renewable hydrogen production.

Most aid instruments are structured as direct grants, though they may also take the form of loans, administratively determined tariffs, or variable payments under two-way contracts for difference.

Among the aids :
• 2 aim to support cleantech manufacturing capacity ;
• 3 are linked to the renewable production of hydrogen, electricity or heat ;
• 1 scheme supports energy intensive companies ;
• 1 scheme supports investments in agriculture.
