Wave power: "A potential 40 TWh/year of electricity production in France" (Lawrence Sigaud, Seaturns)

"France's coastline represents a potential of 40 TWh per year of electricity production from wave energy - a potential that is not neutral, and really complementary to tidal power," Lawrence Sigaud, managing director of start-up Seaturns, told News Tank on 01/06/2026.

The Bordeaux-based company, founded in 2015, is currently deploying a full-scale demonstrator in the Gironde estuary, within the boundaries of the Grand Port Maritime de Bordeaux.

It has also won a call for projects launched by the Mauritian government for a pre-commercial project, in February 2026. "The timing is perfect. The trials in France will last about a year, which means that by mid-2027, we'll have a technology that has been running through one winter, whose performance we'll be able to certify. Meanwhile, in mid-2027, the Mauritius project will be just at the start of its overall engineering phase. The preliminary stages - financial set-up, offshore authorisations, etc. - take time, which is allowing us to move ahead with our testing approach at the same time", says Lawrence Sigaud.
