CountEmissionsEU: the EU rules harmonising transport emissions calculations enter into force

The first EU-wide standardised methodology for calculating greenhouse-gas emissions from freight and passenger vehicles enter into force on 01/06/2026, announced the European Commission.

The CountEmissionsEU framework (adopted on 29/04/2026 and published on 12/05/2026 in the Official journal of the EU) "establishes a single, science-based methodology aligned with international standard (EN ISO 14083:2023) to ensure accurate, comparable, and reliable emissions data across all transport modes".

The document covers all modes of transport (road, sea, inland waterway and air), regardless of the means of transport used (ship, vehicle, pipeline, etc.). It also takes into account GHG emissions from facilities that facilitate the transfer of freight or passengers between different segments of the transport chain, as well as empty journeys required for onward transport.
