European Energy: launch of the construction of the largest agrivoltaic plant in Italy

European Energy has launched construction of a 225.5 MW agrivoltaic project near Vizzini, in Sicily, following a final investment decision (FID) of more than €200M, announced the company in Copenhagen, on 19/05/2026.

According to the company, the facility, located on a 260ha site, is set to become Italy’s largest agrivoltaic plant and one of the largest in Europe. The project strengthens European Energy’s position in the Italian renewable energy market and expands its portfolio of large-scale renewable energy assets in Southern Europe.

Once operational, the site is expected to generate around 405 GWh of electricity per year, equivalent to the consumption of more than 135,000 households, and is expected to avoid 162,090 tCO2/year.

The plant combines renewable electricity production with agricultural activities, including sheep grazing (820 sheep on site), reforestation (90ha of land) and biodiversity measures (olive trees and pricky pears planted on 25ha).
