IMO: The Marine Environment Protection Committee commits to "rebuild consensus" on Net-zero framework

The Marine Environment Protection Committee of the International Maritime Organization (MEPC IMO) commits to "rebuild consensus on global shipping emissions, while sounding the alarm over environmental risks in the Strait of Hormuz and adopting new measures to curb air pollution in the Northeast Atlantic", during the closing of its 84^th session, on 01/05/2026.

While the IMO had decided to adjourn the second extraordinary session last October, during which the Net-Zero Framework was supposed to be voted on, the committee agreed to establish "an intersessional working group to address various concerns and promote greater consensus on a global measure ahead of MEPC 85 in six months' time".

"Member States will be able to submit new amendments and adjustments to the draft amendments previously approved. The second extraordinary session of MEPC is scheduled to resume on 04/12/2026, subject to discussions at MEPC 85, scheduled to convene from 30/11 to 03/12.
