Santa Marta Conference: the French government presents its roadmap for a fossil fuel phase-out

The French government released a roadmap for France's gradual phase-out of fossil fuels on 27/04/2026, on the sidelines of the first Conference on transitioning away from fossil fuels, currently taking place in Santa Marta (Colombia).

"France has been engaged since 2017 in an energy planning to transition away from fossil fuels", points out the roadmap.

The document summarises several French climate plans, including the French ecological planning (2022), the National Low Carbon Strategy (2015-2020-2025), the Multiannual Energy Planning (also called PPE, 2016-2018-2026), the State's green budget (2022) and the National Plan for the Electrification of End-Uses (2026).

On the international side, "France has made coal phase-out a priority of its climate diplomacy over the last 10 years", the roadmap highlights.

It summarises the alliances that France has joined, including the Just Energy Transition Partnerships (launched at COP26), the Coal Transition Commission (launched at COP28) and the two coalitions on the transition away from fossil fuels (PPCA, launched at COP23, and BOGA, launched…
