Agriculture Council: ministers agree on an "holistic approach to strengthen wildfire risk prevention"

EU Ministers for Agriculture "agreed on the importance of an integrated and holistic approach to sustainable forest management in strengthening wildfire risk prevention and resilience" at the Agriculture and Fisheries Council on 27/04/2026.

In particular, "they discussed how the CAP, in combination with other funding instruments, can better incentivise the prevention and management of wildfire risks and enhance landscape resilience."

They also highlighted that:
• the focus should be on the prevention of wildfires ;
• the CAP funding in the next MFF should support "active landscape management and sustainable forest management" ;
• wildfire prevention must be based on regional and local conditions, thus Member States should be allowed flexibility measures to fit their specificities.

"This discussion took place in the context of the Commission’s communication on integrated wildfire risk management, which responds to the growing urgency of wildfire risks across the EU", the Council declares.
