Creation of the Global Green Bond Initiative Fund to support sustainable infrastructure outside the EU

The European Union and partner development finance institutions signed the Global Green Bond Initiative (GGBI) Fund, a new public-private investment tool for sustainable infrastructure projects in low- and middle-income countries, on 24/04/2026.

It aims to unlock up to €3Bn of green bonds in partner countries and help finance activities that support climate and environmental objectives.

With the GGBI Fund, the EU hopes to attract up to €2Bn from private European and international investors, leveraging around €1Bn of equity from public investors, including nearly €800M from a consortium of European institutions led by the EIB.

The GGBI Fund is one of the three pillars of the Global Green Bond initiative of the EU's Global Gateway strategy. This global green bond initiative aims to mobilise up to €20Bn of private capital for large-scale sustainable infrastructure projects while promoting strong green bond markets in partner countries.
