Santa Marta Conference: "France's priority is to implement the Paris Agreement" (Ministry)

"For France, the priority is not to spend hours renegotiating new texts or new instruments, but to implement the Paris Agreement, which sets an objective of carbon neutrality by 2050", declared the French Ministry of Ecological Transition on 27/04/2026 ahead of the high-level discussions that will be held this week in Santa Marta (Colombia) at the First Conference on transitioning away from fossil fuels.

"With the Paris Agreement, we have all the tools we need to make this transition away from fossil fuels", the ministry adds.

News Tank asked the ministry two questions ahead of this international meeting.

Are the European states united on the principle of phasing out fossil fuels?

"Only around sixty countries have been invited to Santa Marta: these are the most ambitious, and in particular all the countries that are part of the various coalitions, such as the 'Behind Oil and Gas' alliance (BOGA), or the PPCA alliance, on abandoning coal", the French Ministry of Ecological Transition tells News Tank.
