"The major success of the G7 Environment: being able to negotiate texts together" (MTE to News Tank)

"The major success of the G7 Environment is that we managed to discuss and negotiate texts together for the protection of the environment, despite the individual positions of each of the countries and the ongoing conflicts", the French Ministry of Ecological Transition told News Tank on 23/04/2026, on the sidelines of the first day of the G7 Environment in Paris.

While the MTE acknowledges that it did not manage to do so on all subjects - particularly those dealing head-on with the climate because of the position of the Trump administration - "the major issues were addressed. With the United States, we had frank discussions, which were not always easy, but we managed to get to the end of all our priorities, with all the G7 countries".

France opted to work on "shared priorities. This allowed us to go further than sticking to grand declarations with very broad, universal objectives, which we could not achieve in the current context. We have therefore focused on more tangible issues, with smaller perimeters, which are also more concrete for citizens".
