"Strengthening cooperation on broader ocean matters": EU and Iceland review progress of their MoU

The Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DG MARE) of the European Commission announced "the EU and Iceland advanced ocean cooperation at the high-level dialogue in Reykjavik" on 17/04/2026.

This dialogue between Costas Kadis, the Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, and Hanna Katrín Friðriksson, Iceland's Minister of Industries, focused on the review of the progress of the Memorandum of Understanding signed in July 2025.

This MoU included, in particular:

• A cooperation on marine biodiversity (conservation, protection, implementation of international conventions, including the Kunming-Montreal Framework and scientific assessments);
• on a sustainable 'blue economy' (blue bioeconomy, energy transition and science and innovation);
• on the energy transition of the fisheries and aquaculture (decarbonisation in the mid-long term);

It also included cooperation on 'sustainable fisheries' (fish stock management) and aquaculture, international fora, research and scientific cooperation, Arctic matters, maritime monitoring and the engagement of stakeholders.
