Introducing a temporary restriction until 01/11/2027 on large-capacity data centre projects is the aim of the legislative amendment presented to the Maine State Legislature, in the United States, News Tank learns on 16/04/2026.

The text stipulates that any facility used primarily to process, store and transmit digital data does not have to be approved by the State authorities if its capacity exceeds 20 MW.

A data centre coordination council is also to be set up. It must assess existing public policy objectives, particularly in terms of renewable energy, greenhouse gas reduction, growth in electricity demand, infrastructure requirements and impacts on grid reliability. It comprises 13 members drawn from public bodies, businesses, environmental organisations, local authorities and trade unions.
