Green jobs in the EU: +2.2 million from 2014 to 2023, reaching 5.8 million in 2023

"Employment in the EU environmental economy increased from 3.6 million full-time equivalents in 2014 to 5.8 million in 2023 (+2.2 million)", declares the European Commission, based on the European environmental goods and services sector accounts data, published by Eurostat on 08/04/2026.

"Employment increased on average 4.4% on an annual basis from 2014 to 2023 and has marked the highest value in 2023", adds Eurostat.

The increase was of 4.2% in one year, from 5.6 million full-time equivalents in 2022 to 5.8 million in 2023. 2018 was the first year that green jobs exceeded 4 million full-time equivalents and 2022 was the first time they exceeded 5 million, showing a continued positive trend in the last decade.

Jobs included in these statistics include environmental protection activities, like eliminating pollution and resource management activities, like preserving natural resources.
