BioCO2: "Clarifying the regulatory framework on negative emissions is key" (K. Rahmani, Club CO2)

"Clarifying the regulatory framework for negative emissions is key. We need to enable the industry to use biogenic CO2. It is also important to define this CO2, with a framework for its use, and with a traceability system that would enable fossil CO2 infrastructures to be used, similar to the guarantees of origin scheme for the biomethane", Karim Rahmani, vice-president of Afen (Association Française pour les Emissions Négatives) and member of Club CO2, told News Tank on 31/03/2026.

He led the Club CO2 study on "Capture, Storage and Use of Biogenic CO2 in France", published in March 2026. Club CO2 is an association that aims to promote the development of the CCSU sector in France.

Biogenic CO2 originates from the energy and waste sectors, biomass combustion in industry, biofuel production and green gas production. According to the study, these emissions amount to around 22 MtCO2/year within this scope, across nearly 2,000 sites, including about 300 industrial sites accounting for 90% of volumes. This represents 10% of European biogenic emissions.
